Homophobes love to argue that LGBTQ+ is a current trend going on among younger generations, doing it just to rebel against society. They don’t know (and won’t acknowledge) that we have been here since ancient times, we been queer, and will continue to blossom no matter what. Let’s sweep aside the veil that hovers over history; here are some stories of iconic lesbian couples that will cheer you up after a long day of surviving in this heteronormative society.
Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West: Love Blossom in Bloomsbury
‘I am reduced to a thing that wants Virginia. I composed a beautiful letter to you in the sleepless nightmare hours of the night, and it has all gone: I just miss you, in a quite simple desperate human way.’ — Letter from Vita, 21st Jan 1926
Both Virginia and Vita met at a dinner party in 1922, starting a twenty-year-long relationship of yearning and adoration. There is nothing more sapphic than eyeing that one enigmatic aristocrat through the room, sipping on fine wine, and… thinking about how wonderful her legs are. Yes, this is true. While Vita thinks highly of Virginia during their first meeting, Virginia's attention is only on her legs. We are fortunate that their exchanged letters are preserved, so we manage to have a glimpse at the relationship of two prominent figures of the openly queer, ahead of its time, most influential English literature circle, Bloomsbury Group. Their relationship ended after Virginia’s suicide, and Vita survived for another 20 years, passing away in Sissinghurst Castle from cancer.
Gertrude Stein and Alice B.Toklas: Power Couple Who Own a Renowed Paris Artistic Salon
Who can imagine, on your first day in the City of Love, you met the love of your life at first sight? Alice knows Gertrude through Gertrude’s brother Leo, who was the host of her stay. Gertrude’s presence captivated her, Alice even describes Gertrude as ‘a golden brown presence burned by the Tuscan Sun.’, a romantic start to their lifelong partnership. I would hate to call their relationship a partnership, they proclaim they are married even if they are not legally married. Historians are too afraid to acknowledge that, but I will happily call wives. They run an artistic salon in their home at 27 rue de Fleurus. Hosting evening gatherings every Saturday with Avante-Garde artists and writers, notable attendees like Pablo Picasso and Ernest Hemingway are also close friends of theirs.
Lady Shangguan and Princess Taiping: A Tragic Pair behind the High Walls of Tang Dynasty
Lady Shangguang and Princess Taiping are two influential political figures during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian. Empress Wu Zetian highly valued Lady Shangguang due to her intelligence, even excusing her past, as her grandfather was against Empress Wu Zetian’s reign, she was even crowned with the unofficial title of the prime minister at that time. Princess Taiping was Empress Wu Zetian beloved daughter, she became a prominent figure in the court of Empress Wu Zetian, solidifying her mother’s influences. In the official record, neither of them has much interaction. But after a coup, Lady Shangguang was killed as a result of supporting the opposition party that did not align with Princess Taiping’s political standing. After her death, Princess Taiping vindicates Lady Shangguang’s name despite being her opposition. There were also official records of Princess Taiping mourning for Lady Shangguang, personally managing her posthumous matter. Princess Taiping was the one who wrote the epitaph on Lady Shangguang’s tomb, ending it with ‘May after a thousand years, someone will remember you in the same way I did.’ Despite there isn’t much official evidence to support the claim that their relationship is romantic, it still couldn’t stop the future generation from speculating about them. Despite all, they are both very talented women in their time, and their influences and contributions have left a lasting mark on history.
